For nearly 30 years, Kodo has explored the boundless potential of the ancient Japanese drum, the taiko. Armed with an arsenal of handmade drums varying in size from big to enormous, the performers convey the two meanings of the word kodo. The literal translation of the two Japanese characters is 'drum' and 'child' - expressing Kodo's desire to play the taiko purely, with the heart of a child. The word kodo is also a homonym for 'heartbeat' - humanity's most fundamental source of rhythm. Inspired by the powerful natural beauty of their home on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, Kodo infuses traditional forms with fresh global influences to create new musical expressions that are utterly unique.
